JUST A GAME ...
Our Academy for Grafic Design let decide the students what kind of work they like to do as a diploma dissertation. One of the lecturers acts as supervisor and guides the student during his half-year dissertation. As an old game-fanatic, it was no question for me, to graduate by designing a game. The game PAGODE (pagoda) I developed some years ago, was basis for the design concept. I decided to take the Thai culture and their design motifs for developing a form- and colourworld for PAGODE. It is not actually a board game with tactical elements and also not exactly only a dexterity game, merely a blend of both. What is PAGODE abaout? In short words: The player acts as a master builder and by playing down cards, he can build coloured coloums on a plinth of the same colour on a thaiform shaped floor. He gains points for each coloum. Floor after floor is built over each other, and a tower developes, which, of course, shall not break down. I needed to design: Floors, cards, a rules booklet, a game box and a little advertise. In addition a conception had to written and presentated to the lecturers auditorium. On the next sides you can see some elements and the look of the game.
